Increased Staffing to Support NIBIN Driven Cases (2019)
Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (Phoenix, AZ)
Population: 4,420,568 | Number of Full-Time Prosecutors: 419 | Contact Information
In 2018, Phoenix partnered with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to build a Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC), which uses data from the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) to make connections between gun crimes using forensic analysis of firearms and ammunition.
The use of NIBIN sharply increased the number of complex multi-defendant, multi-incident, and multiagency cases submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO). In 2019, MCAO used Innovative Prosecution Solutions funding to hire new prosecutors, analysis, and other legal staff to support prosecution of these cases.
